How to watch Eastern Michigan vs. Western Michigan: Live stream, TV channel, start time for Tuesday's NCAA Football game

Who's Playing

Western Michigan @ Eastern Michigan

Current Records: Western Michigan 6-4; Eastern Michigan 6-4

What to Know

The Western Michigan Broncos have enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they must head out on the road. The Eastside and Westside will square off this past Tuesday when they and the Eastern Michigan Eagles meet at Rynearson Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Broncos haven't had much success against EMU in recent history, their last win not since Oct. 6 of 2018.

EMU came up short against the Ohio Bobcats last Tuesday, falling 34-26. A silver lining for EMU was the play of RB Samson Evans, who punched in two rushing touchdowns.

WMU decided to play defense against itself last week, but the team still came out ahead despite their 90 penalty yards. They snuck past the Akron Zips with a 45-40 victory. RB Sean Tyler had a stellar game for WMU as he rushed for one TD and 147 yards on 16 carries in addition to snatching one receiving TD.

The Eagles are expected to lose this next one by 6. Those burned by picking them against the spread two weeks ago might want to keep in mind that the squad has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.

EMU and the Broncos now sit at an identical 6-4. A pair of defensive stats to keep an eye on: EMU is stumbling into the game with the 233rd most rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation, having given up 23 on the season. WMU has experienced some struggles of their own as they are 229th worst in the nation in passing touchdowns allowed, with 22 on the season. It's possible one of these Achilles' heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.

Leading up to Eastern Michigan's official announcement, news leaked by the Detroit Free Press caused a wave of jokes about the rumored gray field at Rynearson Stadium. Holding a press conference int he atrium of the Convocation Center to officially announce the new rendering, Athletics officials said why they chose to do this.

"It helps us build an identity that matches the toughness of our team and connection with our community," EMU Athletic Director Heather Lyke said . "This facility enhancement is an important brick in the foundation of Coach Creighton's vision."

Construction for the new 48,340-square foot gray FieldTurf will begin in July and will be ready to be debuted on August 30, when the Eagles' face off against Morgan State in their home opener. Keeping the hash marks and numbers white, both end zones will be green with "EASTERN" in the north and "EAGLES" in the south in white text. But probably the best part about the new FieldTurf is that the Block E (not the curvy incorrect "E" that's on there now) will utilize all three colors on the 50-yard line.

Why gray turf?

Well, for starters, gray is not sexy. Nobody rocks the all gray turf for that sole reason. Boise State has "The Blue", Eastern Washington's field is red, Central Arkansas has purple and gray and Lindenwood-Belleville's field has the same scheme as UCA's, but it's red and gray.  "EMU Gray" is, essentially, going to be like Boise State's "The Blue".

Let's go back to Lyke's quote about Creighton. This field is going to be a visual building block for what Chris Creighton is trying to do at Eastern Michigan. Since hired back in December, Creighton has quickly become known for wanting to bring the very best out his players. He wants to make his players "E-Tough".

E- Eastern Michigan (duh)

T- Team first

O- Obsessed with getting better

U- Unwavering in adversity

G- Great effort

H- Heart

During the winter workouts back in January and February, Director of Sports Performance Ron McKeefery challenged this squad to outdoor practices, rather than being inside their indoor practice facility. Which, if you're going to be playing football in Michigan, you might as well learn how to deal with the snow. "We will meet you any time, any place" is the message that Creighton preached to his team, and he meant it. Mental toughness is one of the cornerstones of this football team, and he's making it known. "...even on a parking lot covered with broken glass."

Thus, "EMU Gray".

What do you mean by "The Factory"?

Creighton has previously said that he doesn't want to connect Eastern Michigan with Detroit, he wants his program to be connected with Ypsilanti. Detroit's 45 minutes away, but it's not far enough to truly distance yourself from it, let alone the whole southeastern region of Michigan.

Detroit has its problems, and there's no hiding it. There's no hiding that EMU football has their problems, too. But both are filled with hard-working citizens and community members. Which, at this time, seems like a great moment to share this Detroit-centered commercial.

"We are hard-working; this is a blue collar area" team captain Pudge Cotton said. "The gray field fits what our team is about."

Gray is not sexy, but neither is rolling up your sleeves and getting work done. Which reminds me of something former EMU quarterback Ron Adams told me in an interview I had with him a few months back when he talked about going to the California Bowl in 1987, when he rolled up his sleeves before running out of the tunnel, looking at his teammates saying, "It's gonna be one of those games, boys."

"I get that people are throwing stones at this program and that's okay," Creighton said. "We're not doing it for them. We're doing this because we believe in who we are... We're going to embrace it and bring it out."

Where did EMU Athletics get this money from?

Eastern Michigan receives compensation from traveling to schools like Michigan State, University of Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State. We've talked about this before.

"Like we're going to Florida, Old Dominion and Michigan State this year," Lyke said. "They pay us and that money goes into a Game Guarantee account. We're taking part of that money to help pay for the field."

Whatever. It still looks ugly.

Well, we don't know that yet. We just know what the field could look like. In some instances, the picture just doesn't do the actual product any justice. Kind of like the picture of your date that you took to the senior prom. Only time will tell if this ends up being attractive, but Creighton has already said that he doesn't want the facilities to be the front porch of a program. This "EMU Gray" isn't about how cool the color is or isn't, it's a visual representation of what this program has become.

"We're building something that's going to last, and it's not going to be the color that lasts," Creighton said. "It's who we are and our identity that lasts."

Beside this, why is Eastern Michigan's field gray?

Eastern Michigan Unveils New Gray Turf at Rynearson Stadium, Represents Team's Work Ethic. Also known as "The Factory", the new gray turf is meant to represent that these Eagles are going to outwork their opponents on the field.

Similarly, what football field is blue? Albertsons Stadium is widely known for its unusual blue playing surface, installed in 1986, while Boise State was in the Big Sky Conference. It was the first non-green playing surface (outside of painted end zones) in football history and remained the only one among NCAA Division I FBS schools for almost 20 years.

Simply so, what colleges have colored football fields?

Eastern Michigan Universityhas long struggled with poor attendance at its home football games.

And despite a surge of efforts from EMU’s athletic department, EMU’s three home games so far this season have averaged an attendance of 3,903 - well below the 15,000 required by the NCAA.

This year's most promising chance of a highly attended game will come Saturday when the Eagles match-off against Western Michigan University at EMU's homecoming game.

After a win against Central Michigan University last weekend, the Eagles are 4-3 going into their game against the Broncos. EMU football hasn't had such a winning start since 1995.

Additionally, EMU won't have to compete with its Ann Arbor neighbor for attention. Tens of thousands of University of Michigan fans won't be flocking to the Big House, as it's a bye week for the Wolverines.

The question is, will all these ingredients mix to give EMU the attendance it seeks?

Since 2005, the school has been thrice ranked last among fellow NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams for attendance levels per game. Other years, EMU has ranked in the bottom 15 percent.

In fact, for the past decade EMU has kept its FBS status by selling tens of thousands of tickets to Pepsi —one of the corporate sponsors for the athletic department— during NCAA count years, which are every other year.

Last year, an NCAA count year, average attendance was about 6,400. To reach the 15,000-attendance level required for an FBS team, EMU sold Pepsi 50,000 tickets at $3 apiece. Tickets are normally sold at $9 apiece. EMU students receive free entry.

EMU also sold tickets to Pepsi in 2008 and 2006. Both years were NCAA count years.

EMU’s entire athletic department made $133,000 in ticket sales last year and just $2,400 in concessions, according to NCAA figures. $16.5 million —or 83.4 percent— of athletic department funding comes from EMU’s general fund, the highest percentage of general fund support among all 13 athletic departments in the Mid-American Conference. “We have a big stadium, and we have not been that competitive,” said EMU President Susan Martin. She remarked that last year’s 6,400 per-game attendance average was a 25 percent increase from the year before —when levels were at 5,000 per game— but not where the university wants to be.

“For some of the big games we should be doing better than that,” Martin said. “We’re seeing that build. We have a lot more work to do, but I’m confident that we’re going to see increased attendance.”

To increase attendance, EMU has begun offering money to local school systems to get fans filling the seats at Rynearson Stadium, which can hold 30,200 fans.

Last fall the university launched a ticket stimulus program that offers free tickets to students, faculty and staff from more than a dozen local school districts. In addition to the free entry, EMU donates a dollar to a student’s school district every time they attend a game.

“We thought ‘How could we help teachers? How could we help students? And how could we help get more people to the games?'” said Ted Coutilish, who is in charge of marketing EMU’s athletic programs.

Coutilish said that last year EMU sold about 3,000 tickets through the stimulus program.

The school also has moved from a traditional marketing scheme consisting of billboards and media ads to a grass-roots method that thrives on events.

Every Thursday, EMU’s athletic department hosts a lunchtime tailgate party on campus with music, food and giveaways. Every sports season the school has athletes serve EMU students and faculty at a picnic.

“We’ve switched the way we do things, and we saw a big push up in the attendance last year with both basketball and football from that approach,” Coutilish said. “The story I think is a positive one: That we were able to increase attendance… we put in a lot of effort.”

But even though the Eagles are undefeated at home this year, attendance levels at the next three home games will need to increase if EMU doesn't want a repeat of 2009, when EMU's attendance levels were at record-lows and game averages were at least 5,000 fans fewer than all other FBS schools.

Coutilish in part blames this year's low attendance on the weather.

So far this year, each of EMU’s home games has coincided with rainy weather. The first game, against Howard University, was canceled and postponed to the next day. Coutilish estimates that 6,700 people showed up to attend the rainy opener Sept. 3, the day it was canceled. But attendance levels shrunk to 3,563 during the rain date, Sept. 4.

The next game, on Sept. 10, saw 4,771 fans. But attendance at the Oct. 1 game slipped to the lowest level of the year, 3,375.

“At the last two games, we had severe thunderstorms and raining for at least part of the game,” Coutilish said. “The weather plays a big role in attendance.”

Coutilish said that EMU’s proximity to the University of Michigan —which is consistently among the top ranked universities in football attendance and has the largest football venue in the nation— is not helpful.

“There’s no other university in the state that has another university 6 to 7 miles away,” he said. “Certainly that is a factor, but we don’t try to get involved in what they’re doing.”

Three of EMU’s six home games are scheduled on the same day as U-M home games this year.

Below is the average attendance at EMU football games for seven of the past eight years, according to NCAA attendance figures:

  • 2010: 15,885
  • 2009: 5,016
  • 2008: 18,951
  • 2007: 7,448
  • 2006: 14, 734
  • 2005: 5,219
  • 2004: not available
  • 2003: 11, 258
